MAPDA Announces Support For SAFE Project’s Campuses Initiative
October 12, 2021 — Half a million college students personally identify themselves as in recovery, yet fewer than 5% of US college campuses provide any form of recovery support.
To help fill that gap, MAPDA (Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse) announced today that it will partner with SAFE Project’s Campuses initiative to provide additional financial support for their technical assistance program.
“MAPDA is pleased to partner with SAFE Project on their technical assistance for their SAFE Campuses Program,” said the Honorable Mary Bono, Chairman and CEO of MAPDA. “This is a mission that is near and dear to our hearts — to provide resources that will be a guiding light for college students in recovery.”
The SAFE Campuses initiative was launched after co-founders Admiral Sandy and Mary Winnefeld lost their son to an accidental overdose on his fourth day of college.
“Through partnerships like this, we are able to ensure that the promises of higher education are implemented and accessible to those of us carrying the impacts of addiction as well as the gifts of recovery,” said SAFE Project Executive Director, Brandee Izquierdo. “So many of our leaders and solutions to the issues in our communities have been developed on a college campus, and we are making sure that this is the case for addiction and overdose, too.”
SAFE Campuses has advised more than 300 universities, colleges, and community colleges nationwide, providing technical assistance on how to make campuses more recovery-supportive. Advice ranges from taking first steps towards acknowledging addiction on campus to establishing and refining a collegiate recovery program. SAFE Campuses also developed the Reconnected app, a networking social app for students and alumni in recovery to create and maintain connection.
MAPDA (Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in loving memory of two children lost to prescription opioid overdoses. MAPDA is dedicated to preventing other families from facing the same tragedy by striving to banish unused prescription opioids from homes, ending the stigma of drug addiction, and demanding accessible, effective treatment.
SAFE (Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic) Project is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to overcoming the epidemic of addiction in the United States. SAFE was founded in 2017 by Admiral James and Mary Winnefeld, following the loss of their 19-year old son Jonathan to an accidental opioid overdose.
