July 26, 2021 – Today, SAFE Project, along with the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse (MAPDA), Shatterproof, and our sponsor, Emergent BioSolutions, are joining our voices, resources, and missions to launch the Reverse the Silence Campaign.
Reverse the Silence is a breakthrough TV and radio public awareness and educational campaign addressing the risks associated with opioid use, featuring professional football player, Darren Waller, who is in recovery from opioid use disorder, and lifestyle content creator, Dani Schaffer who lost her brother to an accidental overdose. At the core of Reverse the Silence is a series of powerful 15 to 60-second TV and radio spots that will air across the country over the next four months.
Last year, more than 93,000 Americans lost their lives to a drug overdose. That is more people than the capacity of most professional football stadiums, and it is why we have teamed up with leading nonprofits in the addiction and recovery space.
Each one of us can play a part in stopping this national crisis. Here are actions you can take, right now, to reverse the increasing number of overdoses and deaths.
- Take the No Shame Pledge. End stigma, a barrier to people seeking help.
- Have a Safety Plan. Naloxone, an overdose reversal drug, can save lives.
- Share Your Story. Save lives by talking about addiction and mental health.
“Our son Jonathan died from an accidental overdose. If only the people around him understood that addiction was a disease. An overdose can happen at any time and to anyone using opioids. No one in our society is immune from the dangers of opioid overdoses,” said Admiral James and Mary Winnefeld, Co-Founders of SAFE Project.
Overdoses are real people, not statistics. They are our children, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and neighbors. Help reverse the silence and stop overdoses by visiting www.reversesilence.org.
